Two doctors held for sex determination tests in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Two doctors an auto-rickshaw driver were arrested in Attapur on Friday on charges of conducting illegal prenatal sex determination examinations and charging Rs. 3000 from pregnant women for the same.

The arrests came in wake of decoy operation by the Chaitanyapuri police and the Rachakonda SHE Team. They had information that the sex determination tests were being conducted in Ushodaya Hospital, Attapur. The arrested doctors were identified as Dr. Vipparthi Sarala, Dr. Ayesha Fathima, and an auto-rickshaw driver, Sharagond Anjaneyulu.

Chaitanyapuri police Sub Inspector D. Narasaiah, along with women constables form the SHE Team and Dr. Angadi Bala Narendra, District Medical Health Officer (DMHO) had gone to the hospital. One of the women who was seven months pregnant, was sent as a decoy and on her request, Dr. Vipparthi Sarala, Dr. Ayesha Fathima, conducted scanning for sex determination after taking Rs. 3000 and issued a report to her disclosing the gender of the baby.

Anjaneyulu used to take the interested pregnant women to Ushodaya Hospital.  

Police said that they first nabbed Anjaneyulu. Based on his confession confronted the two doctors with charges.

Chaitanyapuri police Sub Inspector D. Narasaiah told siasat.com, “The two doctors confessed that they had performed sex determination tests. We could find three women on whom the tests were earlier performed. Anjaneyulu collected Rs. 9,000 from each patient. He and his associates used to take Rs. 6,000 while they used to give the remaining Rs. 3,000 to the doctors.  We are investigating for how long the accused have been practicing the offence.”
