SC issues notices to Centre, EC for contempt of court proceedings

New Delhi: Centre and Election Commission have been served notices by the Supreme Court today for contempt of court proceedings.

The apex court move comes in connection with a plea filed by Lawyer Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay seeking initiation of contempt proceedings for alleged violation of the court’s order that had directed all nominated candidates to declare their criminal antecedents to the poll panel before contesting elections, News18 reports.

The bench comprising of Justices R F Nariman and Vineet Saran had also sought a response from the three deputy election commissioners, law secretary and the cabinet secretary for not complying with its judgment order dated September 25, 2018.

A five-judge Constitution bench had last year in September ordered all contesting candidates will have to declare their criminal antecedents to the Election Commission(EC) before the polls along with publicizing their records through print and electronic media.
