Woman burnt alive for registering Triple Talaq complaint

Lucknow: With Triple Talaq Bill enforcement, speculations of women safety, equality still continue to haunt Muslim women which many community members believe have only worsened the plight of Muslim women left to struggle for the rest of their lives after bringing their husbands to justice.

In a similar case, a 22-year-old Sayeeda was allegedly burnt alive by her husband and in-laws in front of her five-year-old daughter in UP’s Gadra village of Shravasti district after the victim had lodged a police complaint on being given triple talaq, TOI reports.

According to the victim’s father Ramzan Khan, his son son-in-law, Nafees (26), who works in Mumbai, had given triple talaq to his daughter over phone on August 6.

“Sayeeda went to lodge a complaint, but police did not register a case and sent her home telling her to let her husband return from Mumbai. When Nafees arrived on August 15, police summoned the couple, talked to them and told Sayeeda to stay with Nafees,” Khan stated in his complaint.

The victim’s minor daughter Fatima in her statement told police, “On Friday noon, my father returned after offering Namaz and told mother to go away since he had given her talaq, resulting in a spat, and my granny, grandpa have lit the matchstick”.

“My grandfather Azizullah, grandmother Haseena, and aunts Gudiya, Nadira came. Father held my mother by her hair and thrashed her, my aunts Nadira and Gudiya poured kerosene and grandfather Azizullah and grandmother Haseena lit a match,” said the minor who watched the whole in-humane incident.

Fatima’s maternal uncle took her to the Police to narrate the incident, soon after which a police team was dispatched to look into case.

The perpetrators have not yet been brought to justice though FIR was registered on Saturday. ‘I will even knock the doors of the Supreme Court, ’ said the victims father.

Shravasti SP, Ashish Srivastva told:  “An FIR has been registered against Nafees and his family members on charges of dowry harassment, murder, and dowry prohibition act. The allegations of victim’s father about triple talaq will be probed. It will be seen why a case was not registered if the victim had approached police on August 6.”
