KOLKATA: People’s protest against the amended Citizenship Act continued for the second consecutive day on Saturday in West Bengal.
Hundreds of protestors protesting against the divisive agenda took to streets to express their anguish.
Sankrail railway station, which comes under South Eastern Railway Murshidabad and North 24 Paraganas districts, and rural Howrah reported an incident of violence.
Train services were disrupted. Around 15 buses, both public and private were torched in Howrah that connects both NH6 (Mumbai Road) and NH2 (Delhi Road) to Kolkata.
The ticket counter was set ablaze in Sankrail station under South Eastern Railway, with the protestors also obstructing the train tracks and halting vehicular movement by putting up roadblocks at Champatala crossing with burning tyres.
India is home to 11 percent of the world’s Muslims.
The Citizenship Amendment Bill has now become the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, following assent from President Ram Nath Kovind.
Before becoming a law, the CAB was passed by both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha to provide Indian nationality to Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, Parsis, Jains, and Buddhists fleeing persecution in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh with a cut-off date of December 31, 2014, and there will not be treated as illegal immigrants.
The passage of CAB has trigged intense protests in the Northeastern states.
Prohibitory orders under section 144 of the CrPc have been promulgated in some parts after Tuesday’s violence, clashes and attacks.
